  • Do I need my own kit to play Ice Hockey?
At first, we lend out extra kit from an absent player in any given week, but we would recommend anyone who wants to play to get their own. Due to the tough nature of the sport, protective equipment is mandatory.
  • I am new to Ice Hockey, I can't even skate. What should I do?
Okay, we can definitely help you out. Firstly we’ll help you to learn to skate at public skating sessions held on weekday afternoons and weekend mornings at Murrayfield Ice Rink. Once you got several hours of skating experience, we can lend you some equipment so you can come to our training sessions and try your abilities out. Over time you’ll be able to buy your own equipment and start playing games. We have a beginner's team that plays regular friendly fixtures and competes in the non-contact BUIHA Division 3 Championship weekend. The Edinburgh Beagles is in its second year and is always looking for new players to strengthen the team.
  • Where Can I Buy Kit?
The best places to look are online Hockey stores (see the LINKS section of the website). Most of them are based in the US but do ship products over to the UK. However, it is vitally important that you know what size you are, especially for skates. A local shop is present near the rink and they do discounts if you buy full kit with them. Speak to them and they can advise you best.
  • Do you play contact hockey?
We play both non-contact and contact. The Edinburgh Eagles university team play in the British Universities Ice Hockey Association (BUIHA) Division 1 which IS contact hockey. The Edinburgh Phoenix in the Scottish Recreational Ice Hockey conference (SRIHC) and the Edinburgh Beagles beginner university team in the BUIHA Division 3 Championship play non-contact hockey.
  • Why are practices so late?
Murrayfield Ice Rink has huge demand. This means the ice rink noramlly prioritises its schedule. Most recreational teams play very late at night. We are no different.
  • Where can I find information on events?
Best place to look is this website. Most of our up and coming events can be found on the left-hand side of any of our webpages. If you would like to know about other University teams, check out www.buiha.org.uk which also includes information on the Edinburgh Eagles and Beagles positions in Cup Competitions and Championships.
  • Which university does this team belong to? Can students only from that university join the team?
This club was created by students from a wide variety of higher education institutions in Scotland and we accept students studying at any University in Scotland.
  • How much does it cost to join?
Assuming you already have you own kit and are committed to the team, you will only need to pay for insurance and practice. Insurance costs £40 a year. Each practice costs £10.
  • What kit do I need to have?
From top to bottom, the full kit list is: Helmet, Mouth Guard, Shoulder Pads, Elbow Pads, Hockey Gloves, Shorts, Leg Pads, Skates and Stick. If you are under 21 you must also wear a full face visor. After age 21 a half visor is optional on your helmet. For ladies a full face visor is mandatory at all times. These rules are enforced by the SRIHC and BUIHA.
  • Are there any age restrictions?
Yes - to train at recreational ice hockey you must be at least 16 years old. You are further restricted by not being allowed to play a game until you are 18 years old. these rules are applied by the insurance companies and full details are available at the Scottish Recreational Ice Hockey Conference website at www.srihc.com.
